ICL stands for Indian Cricket League, whereas BCCI stands for Board of
Control for Cricket in India. These are the two parallel cricket organisations
that have been giving shape to cricket in a new direction. On one hand, ICL is a
private organisation and on the other BCCI is an apex governing body for cricket
in India. Both these organisation though working towards the goal of encouraging
the spirit of cricket, have different sets of rules and regulations governing
it.
Emergence of Indian Cricket League was basically a counterattack against the
authoritarian ways of the BCCI. Essel Group that supports and founded the ICL,
is a sister concern of Zee Telefilms. This private league is a Rs. 100 croce
enterprise, with its headquarters at Mumbai. It offers an alternative approach
to BCCI. This is to imply that, rather than merely 20 players, it caters to a
larger bunch of young cricket players collected throughout the length and
breadth of the country. The chairman of this recently formed cricket body is
Kapil Dev with Dean Jones, Tony Greig, and Kiran More as executive board
members.
BCCI, an autonomous administered cricket body with Mr. Sharad Pawar as its
President has the authority to select umpires, players that represent India in
the international arena. The BCCI does not recognize the ICL as a cricket
league, and has put forth a ban on players who are associated with ICL. This
autonomous organisation was established way back in the year 1929 with the
intention to promote cricket in India.
In accordance to the
assumption made, it is said that within a span of 5-10 years the revenue and
influence of the BCCI. The competitive spirit amongst these two parallel cricket
organisations is sure to provide ample opportunities to the cricket talent in
the country. However, it would take some time until the fate of the ICL (Indian
Cricket League) is ascertained.
