The future of ICL is yet to be established as it is full of speculations.
Although, the ICL (Indian Cricket League) has emerged as an alternative to the
BCCI but its potential to sustain its name is yet to be seen. ICL, the
abbreviated version of Indian Cricket League is a Rs. 100 croce project
undertaken by the Essel Group under the leadership of Subhash Chandra.
ICL involves as its member, some of the well-known players from national and
international cricket arena. Some of the players who have joined with the ICL
include Brian Lara, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Kapil Dev, Dinesh Mongia, Nicky Boje, Rohan
Gavaskar, Sumit Kalia, Imran Farhat, Tony Greig amid others. At present, about
51 players are being trained in the camp organised by the ICL for the upcoming
tournament in the mid –November.
It is anticipated that within a span of 5-10 years the ICL would take over
BCCI, in terns of influence and revenue. Its only time that shall indicate to
the fact, whether or not the ICL is effectual enough to promote the cricket
amongst the young talent as it plans out to.
League offers a platform to several budding cricket talent that are spread
across the country, looking for opportunities to showcase their metal. The
reason that several international and national players of repute have joined
hands with ICL, paints an optimistic picture. In fact, the league has received
support from all quarters including government bodies.
The major concern for the ICL was the availability of stadiums for practice
and tournaments. This was resolved by support from a private sector resort with
cricket enabled facilities. The name of this private sector resort is Mayajaal
which is located in the state of Chennai.
It is just the beginning for the ICL, which may have to face tough
competition in the face of the already existent cricket organisations like the
BCCI.
